TAI Summit - How to Connect, Learn & Thrive

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-time conference attendee, attending a conference can be a busy yet rewarding experience. It presents a significant opportunity to network, gain knowledge, and truly appreciate the event. Here are some tips you may find helpful as you prepare to meet us at the 2025 Summit.

Plan Ahead

I find it best to have an action plan to make my travel a little easier on myself by checking the conference agenda, downloading any apps, and checking the registration list. By analyzing the agenda, you can pre-register for desired breakout sessions, formulate pertinent questions, research the guest speakers, and engage with fellow attendees. Nothing says, "I came prepared" like identifying a few key people you want to meet.

Dress the Part

My personal mantra is, “when you look good, you feel good.” If you're anything like me, I tend to overthink during my packing process. Is it business casual? Business formal? Something in between? Remember to check the agenda for the list of events. For example, at this year’s summit, we’re having an 80’s theme party, and we’re asking everyone to come dressed in their best 80’s theme gear. Other helpful tips: Check with someone that previously attended the conference, try to look at pictures from the previous years to see how the attendees were dressed; most companies post them on their website or LinkedIn page, or you can always reach out to the conference host to ask. One rule of thumb I recommend following is: aim for polished professionalism and remember whatever shoes you pack must be able to survive a full day of standing and walking. Your feet will thank you!

The Art of Introduction

If you find the idea of approaching a stranger daunting, keep in mind that everyone is present to connect. Initiate with a straightforward introduction: "Hello, I am [Your Name] from [Your Company]. May I ask what motivated you to attend the conference?" This approach serves as an effective icebreaker without resembling a sales pitch.

Remember to Take Notes

During industry events, you will encounter numerous industry terms and may seek additional information on specific topics. I recommend to document key takeaways in a notebook, on your mobile device, or through another app. Additionally, when establishing new connections, make a note of the individuals you meet along with personal details, such as their interests or recent travels, to facilitate meaningful follow-up communications.

 Work Smarter, Not Harder

If you have previously attended a Reinsurance Industry conference, you recognize the value of the insights shared by leading professionals in the field. I encourage you to expand your network by connecting with at least three new contacts. Engaging with new professionals may reveal emerging talents in the industry who could benefit from your expertise or provide valuable information of interest.

 Follow-up with Connections

Follow-up with Connections Post-Conference It is essential to maintain the momentum of valuable discussions initiated during conferences. After returning to your regular work routine, allocate time to send follow-up messages to contacts made at the event. A brief email from your professional account or a LinkedIn message referencing your conversation can help solidify your relationship. Additionally, if they mentioned a personal interest, such as a favorite sports team, consider sharing relevant articles or resources in your follow-up to enhance the connection.

While conferences may seem solely focused on work, they are pivotal for networking and collaboration. These events foster the formation of partnerships and the exchange of innovative ideas. Engaging in conversation over coffee during breakout sessions or informal gatherings can lead to significant developments in the Reinsurance sector. Whether you are new to conferences or an experienced attendee, there is always an opportunity to learn and contribute; maintain your curiosity and prioritize networking.
